The Ekiti State Government has called on young people in the state to take active roles in civic duties, saying their participation is crucial to Nigeria’s progress and unity.
The Director-General of the Bureau of Civic Orientation and Citizenship (BCOC), Mrs. Olawumi Famuyiwa, made the call while delivering her goodwill message at the Year 2026 Leadership Summit 3.0 and 3rd Anniversary of the Nigeria Youth Congress (NYC), held in Adoo Ekiti, tagged “Years of Purposeful Leadership: Growing Together in Achieving More.”
Mrs Famuyiwa emphasized the role of cultural heritage and civic responsibility in nation-building. She urged youths to embrace the Omoluabi ethos and core Ekiti values such as dignity of labour, hard work, discipline, respect for elders, honesty, and ethical conduct, describing them as the foundation of a strong and cohesive society.
She commended Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for exemplifying Omoluabi values in governance, noting that his respect for elders and commitment to ethical leadership should serve as a model for the younger generation.
Expressing concern over the rising tide of internet fraud, money rituals, and the “get-rich-quick” mentality, the BCOC Director-General also lamented the decline in decent dressing among youths. She advised them to adopt appearances and behaviors that reflect cultural values and integrity.
“Young people are the architects of Ekiti’s future and Nigeria’s tomorrow,” she said. “Uphold your cultural values, engage meaningfully in civic life, and resist negative influences if we are to build a better nation.”
At the event, Mrs Famuyiwa was presented with an Award of Excellence in recognition of her contributions to youth development in the state.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Nigeria Youth Congress, Ekiti State Chapter, Aare Temitope Adedara, expressed gratitude to Governor Oyebanji for creating opportunities for Ekiti youths to thrive.
“We assure you, sir, that Ekiti youths stand firmly with you,” he said. He highlighted several empowerment and capacity-building programs implemented by the congress over the past year and pledged that the remaining year of the administration would be even more impactful through sustained partnerships with government and stakeholders.
Adedara also charged his peers to make responsible choices. “Stay away from drug abuse and cultism. The future is in your hands, and your destiny is tied to the progress of this nation,” he said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Comrade Leo Omotayo, said the anniversary was dedicated to honoring the spirit of youth — a force defined by hope, ambition, and the drive for positive change.
“Youth is not just a phase of life; it is a powerful force capable of transforming societies. As young people, you have the energy to innovate, the courage to challenge norms, and the passion to pursue your dreams,” Omotayo said.
He added that the summit would feature sessions on leadership, entrepreneurship, and social impact designed to inspire, challenge, and equip participants. “The future isn’t somewhere we go; it’s something we create. Let’s turn ideas into action and shape Nigeria’s future,” he concluded.
The summit brought together youth leaders, stakeholders, and government representatives for dialogue and empowerment aimed at strengthening civic engagement across Ekiti State.
