Ekiti State Government has engaged traditional rulers, community leaders and women groups in Efon Alaaye Local Government Area to strengthen grassroots support for the Nigeria For Women Programme (NFWP).
The meeting, held at Efon-Alaaye Town Hall, brought together government officials, legislators, women leaders and development partners to deepen community understanding of the programme and promote local ownership.
Speaking at the forum, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Peju Babafemi, described the NFWP as a targeted initiative to improve women’s socio-economic wellbeing through financial inclusion, skills acquisition, capacity building and collective action under Women Affinity Groups (WAGs).
She said the active involvement of traditional institutions and other critical stakeholders is critical to successful grassroots implementation.
Chairman of Efon Local Government, Mr Segun Afolabi, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting the programme through sustained collaboration with the state government and traditional leaders.
Coordinator of the Ekiti State Project Coordinating Unit (SPCU), Mrs Oluwatoyin Familoni, said the programme would enhance women’s economic productivity, reduce household poverty and promote inclusive growth across the state. She noted that strengthened women’s groups and improved access to skills, savings and livelihoods would support long-term economic stability and community development.
The meeting featured a peer-learning session with Ogun State Project Coordinating Unit represented by Mrs Opeoluwa Asoro, who shared experiences and best practices from Ogun State and assured continued technical support to Ekiti.
The representative of the Alaaye of Efon, Oba Emmanuel Aladejare, and other community leaders commended the state government for involving them in the programme’s implementation and pledged their support for community mobilisation and sustained ownership.
Participants included the Ekiti State House of Assembly member representing Efon Constituency, Hon Bosede Olowookere; Director-General of the Office of Transformation Strategy, Dr John Ekundayo; Director-General of the Bureau of Civic Orientation, Mrs Olawumi Famuyiwa; representatives of the Office of the Wife of the Governor and other stakeholders.
The Nigeria For Women Programme, supported by the Federal Government and World Bank, is currently being implemented in three pilot local government areas in Ekiti State—Efon, Gbonyin and Moba—to enhance women’s economic opportunities and promote inclusive development.
