EKIRS Urges Okada Riders to Regularise Documents Amid Enforcement Concerns

 

The Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service (EKIRS) has urged commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators to regularise their documents and comply with the state’s regulatory requirements to avoid unnecessary confrontations with law enforcement agencies.

The Director of New Growth Areas and Other Taxes at EKIRS, Mrs Oluwasade Daramola, made the call on Monday in Ado-Ekiti while receiving a delegation of motorcyclists led by the Chairman of the Okada Riders Association, Comrade Kunle Ashaolu.

The delegation visited the EKIRS Head Office, Revenue House, following complaints from some riders about alleged harassment and improper demands by law enforcement personnel during enforcement activities.

Daramola said EKIRS, in collaboration with the Ekiti State Ministry of Transportation, was working to ensure the timely availability of Riders’ Permits for commercial motorcyclists and tricyclists who had completed the required registration process.

She said the ministry had been informed of the complaints and was taking steps to address them and ensure that enforcement activities were conducted appropriately.

According to her, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations had assured the Ministry of Transportation that all Divisional Police Officers had been directed to caution their personnel against actions that could lead to unnecessary confrontations with riders.

Daramola, however, stressed that the intervention did not exempt operators from complying with existing regulations.

 She urged riders without valid documents or properly registered number plates to regularise their papers and registration to avoid difficulties during enforcement.

The director, who was accompanied by the Head of Road Taxes, Mr Felix Ademiluyi, also advised motorcycle owners to collect their number plates and other processed documents awaiting collection.

 She urged them not to wait until they were stopped or apprehended before regularising their documents.

Responding, Ashaolu appreciated EKIRS for its prompt intervention, saying the move would help reduce avoidable misunderstandings between commercial motorcyclists and relevant authorities.

The state’s regulatory process followed a July 2026 directive by the Ekiti State Ministry of Transportation for the biometric registration of all commercial motorcycle riders and tricycle operators. 

The registration is to be followed by the issuance of valid Riders’ Permits to operators who complete the process.
