The Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has sealed a residential building along Ilawe Road, Ado-Ekiti, over the improper discharge of sewage onto the street during septic tank evacuation.
The enforcement action followed reports by concerned residents over the environmental and public health risks posed by the indiscriminate evacuation of sewage into the street.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mrs Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, led officials of the ministry on an inspection visit to assess the level of environmental violation.
Speaking during the inspection, Aluko-Ajisafe condemned the act, describing it as unacceptable and hazardous to public health.
She stressed that residents and operators handling sewage disposal must comply strictly with environmental sanitation regulations.
The commissioner warned that the state government would not tolerate practices capable of endangering the health and wellbeing of residents or causing environmental pollution in communities.
She reiterated the commitment of the state government to enforcing environmental laws to safeguard public health and maintain a clean and safe environment.
Also present during the inspection and enforcement exercise were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Dr Sunday Omoya; General Manager, State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), Mr Olukayode Adumo; General Manager, Ekiti State Waste Management Authority, Mr Tawose Adekunle; Director of Environmental Health and Sanitation, Mr Ayodele Aluko; and other environmental health officers of the ministry.
The affected property was subsequently sealed pending compliance with environmental safety and sanitation requirements, while further investigations are ongoing.
