Ekiti Receives 80,500 Livestock Vaccine Doses to Tackle Animal Diseases

Ekiti State Government on Thursday received 80,500 doses of livestock vaccines from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development through the Livestock Productivity & Resilience Support ( L-PRES) Project as part of strategic steps to prevent and control transboundary animal diseases in the state.

The vaccines include 50,000 doses of Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), 30,000 doses of Newcastle Disease Vaccine (NDV), and 500 doses of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines.

Speaking shortly after receiving the vaccines in  Ado Ekiti, the State Capital, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, said the intervention was part of the state government’s efforts to strengthen animal health, boost livestock productivity, and safeguard farmers’ livelihoods.

Boluwade noted that effective disease surveillance and control were essential to achieving sustainable food security and positive public health outcomes in the state.

He assured livestock farmers and other stakeholders that the vaccines would be deployed through coordinated vaccination campaigns to ensure wide coverage across livestock clusters and farming communities.

Also speaking, the State Project Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, Mr. Olayinka Adedipe, said the vaccine delivery aligned with the project’s ongoing interventions to strengthen animal health systems and build resilience against cross-border animal diseases.

Adedipe added that the project would collaborate with veterinary officers to ensure proper cold-chain management, handling, and effective administration of the vaccines.

The Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Adedamola Fasoranti, stressed the importance of timely vaccination in preventing disease outbreaks, saying the intervention would reduce livestock mortality, improve productivity, and ensure safer animal products for consumers.

In his remarks, the Legal Adviser of L-PRES, Mr. Ken Agim, who represented the National Project Coordinator, Dr. Abubakar Sanusi, reaffirmed the project’s commitment to supporting states in strengthening livestock disease surveillance and control.

Agim commended the Ekiti State Government for its collaboration and preparedness to effectively implement the vaccination programme.

The vaccine delivery is expected to enhance livestock health management and support sustainable livestock development in Ekiti State.
