EKIRS Seeks Full Compliance with New Tax Laws by Local Authorities

The Ekiti State Internal Revenue Service, EKIRS, has advised Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas to operate in line with the provisions of the New Tax Laws as well as the Ekiti State Revenue Tax Administration Law, 2025, in order to lessen the burden of individuals and business.

Executive Chairman EKIRS, Mr. Olaniran Olatona, gave the advice at the Headquarters of the Service in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday while mediating in a tax matter raised by some concerned business owners in Oye Local Government Area against the tax Consultant for the Council.

During the engagement, he emphasized the need for Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas to familiarize themselves with the collectibles, licenses and permits rates/fees for various business activities and trade under their jurisdictions as well as the various categories they fall.

Mr. Olatona, who doubles as the Chairman of Ekiti State Joint Revenue Committee, noted that the actions of revenue generating agencies, Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas must be geared towards the Ease of Doing business agenda of the Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration and to actualize an investor-friendly state. 

Explaining that tax issues are not resolved on social media, he insisted that any taxpayer who feels arbitrarily charged by the demand notice of EKIRS or Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas can challenge or question the basis for such heavy assessment through a Letter of Objection to the affected body. 

The Executive Chairman then encouraged traders, under their various associations and union, to engage tax experts to sensitize them on tax laws.

Following the intervention, Chairman of Oye Local Government Area, Mrs. Adesola Bamisile, and Secretary, Mr. Ayodeji Omowaye, thanked the EKIRS boss for enlightening them on the grey areas in the Ekiti State Revenue Tax Administration Law, 2025, saying they would return to do the needful.

The Council’s Consultant, Chief Fredrick Idowu, who took responsibility for the accusations raised against him by the traders, promised to address all concerns and avoid such in the future.

On their part, the agitating traders, led by Coordinator, the Association of Traders and Business Owners, Oye Ekiti, Mr. Ifedayo Adaralode, hailed the intervention and sensitization by the EKIRS chair.

They also agreed to sheathe their sword and work in the interest of peace and progress of Oye Local Government Area.

Recall that one Blessing Amudipe had raised an alarm in a recent video, where he accused the Consultant engaged by the Management of Oye Local Government area of placing heavy tax burdens on traders in the Council.
