‎EKITI 2026: NUJ URGES PARTIES, CANDIDATES TO ABIDE BY ELECTORAL ACT

 

…Urges Media Owners to Motivate Journalists for Improved Productivity

 

Ahead of the June 2026 gubernatorial election in Ekiti State, the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on political parties and their candidates to adhere strictly to the provisions of the Electoral Act electoral before and during the election.

 

The Union made the call in a 5-paragraph communique which was signed by its Secretary, O’Seun Ogunsakin and issued at the end of its January 2026 congress held in Ado Ekiti.

 

While stressing the need for political actors to play by the rules by conducting their activities strictly within the ambit of the law, the umbrella body for journalists stated that peaceful campaigns, respect for democratic principles and strict adherence to electoral guidelines are not negotiable.

 

“In view of the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Ekiti State, the Congress appealed to all political actors, particularly political parties and their candidates to play by the rules by conducting their activities strictly within the ambit of the law. It emphasized the need for peaceful campaigns, respect for democratic principles, and strict adherence to electoral guidelines. Congress also advised the electorate to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and to shun vote-buying before or during elections”, it stated.

The NUJ also advised journalists to remain security-conscious and professional in the discharge of their duties, especially while on election duties.

 

The Union also warned against unethical practices and encouraged verification of information before publication and shunning sensational journalism.

 

Meanwhile, the Union has also called on Ekiti State Government and owners of media outfits in the State to ensure journalists are adequately motivated, protected and supported in line with best professional standards.

 

It urged them to improve on the remuneration of journalists, their working conditions, and provision of basic entitlements as a means of motivating them to work ethically.
