Ekiti Govt Trains Health Workers on Hormonal IUD Services

The Ekiti State Government, in collaboration with Jhpiego Nigeria, has trained healthcare workers on the provision of Hormonal Intrauterine Device (H-IUD) services to improve access to modern contraceptives in the state.

The two-day H-IUD Scale-Up Training, tagged “Building Skills for Quality H-IUD Services”, was held in Ado-Ekiti to strengthen the capacity of family planning providers and other relevant stakeholders.

Speaking at the training, the Family Planning Officer, State Ministry of Health, Mrs Adekemi Bukola, said the programme was aimed at equipping participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to provide safe, effective and client-centred H-IUD services.

Bukola said the training covered key areas, including H-IUD characteristics and benefits, medical eligibility criteria, client screening and counselling, infection prevention and control, insertion and removal procedures, management of side effects and identification of potential complications.

She said the initiative underscored the commitment of the state government to strengthening the capacity of its health workforce and improving access to quality reproductive health services for women and families.

Also speaking, the Ekiti State Team Lead of Jhpiego Nigeria, Dr Muriana Olotu, said the organisation remained committed to providing technical support, strengthening health systems and building the capacity of healthcare workers to promote sustainable improvements in healthcare delivery in the state.

Olotu said a major component of the training was practical demonstration and supervised hands-on practice, which enabled participants to translate classroom knowledge into essential clinical skills under the guidance of experienced facilitators.

In his contribution, the Senior Health System Strengthening Officer of Jhpiego Nigeria, Dr Olusegun Adeniyi said the training was designed to ensure that healthcare providers were better equipped to deliver quality H-IUD services in line with accepted clinical standards.

Adeniyi noted that the programme featured technical presentations, interactive discussions, demonstrations and hands-on practical sessions using anatomical models.

It also included pre- and post-training assessments to enable participants to assess their knowledge and identify areas requiring further improvement.
