Twenty public secondary schools in Ekiti have received internet routers with one-year complimentary data subscriptions to enhance digital learning and access to educational resources.
The intervention was sponsored by Focused Team Foundation with funding from UNICEF, in partnership with MTN.
Speaking at the presentation in Ado-Ekiti, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Olabimpe Aderiye, commended the sponsors for supporting the state government’s efforts to strengthen digital learning in public schools.
Aderiye said reliable internet connectivity had become central to modern teaching and learning, adding that the intervention would complement existing digital facilities and give teachers and students access to more knowledge, research materials and educational resources.
She urged beneficiary schools to use the facilities primarily for teaching, learning and research, and ensure proper maintenance.
The Commissioner said the initiative aligned with the state government’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for effective teaching and learning and preparing students for the demands of the digital age.
Earlier, Mr Isaiah Akinbaani, Senior Lead, Sales and Trade Department, MTN, said the initiative was designed to provide internet connectivity to schools across Nigeria.
Akinbaani said it would make digital and real-life learning experiences more accessible, helping to bridge knowledge gaps and expose learners to information and developments beyond the classroom.
According to him, the 20 schools constituted the pilot phase of the programme, which would be scaled up to cover more schools across the state.
He said each beneficiary school received a router with a complimentary monthly data subscription of 30GB initially and 32GB subsequently for one year.
The benefitting schools include Ekiti State Government College, Ikere-Ekiti; Government College, Ado-Ekiti; Gbemisola Olowolafe Memorial Grammar School, Are-Ekiti; Ado Community High School; All Souls Anglican High School; CAC High School; and Corpus Christi College, Ilawe-Ekiti, among others.
Also present at the event were the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr Tope Akomolede, and the AGILE (Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment) State Coordinator, Mrs Yewande Adesua.
