The Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has warned residents of the Aba Igbogun community in Ado-Ekiti against spreading processed cassava on roadsides and highways to dry, citing public health and safety concerns.
The warning came during a sensitisation and health education visit to the community by a team of environmental health officers from the ministry, led by the Director of Environmental Health and Sanitation, Ayodele Aluko.
Aba Igbogun sits along the newly constructed Ring Road leading to the Ekiti State Cargo Airport, where drying processed cassava on the shoulder of the busy highway has become a common practice.
Aluko said the practice exposes the food to dust, vehicle emissions and other contaminants, making it unsafe for consumption and raising the risk of disease outbreaks.
He added that it also endangers motorists and residents by creating avoidable road hazards that could lead to accidents.
According to him, the practice also constitutes an environmental nuisance and diminishes the aesthetic value of the area.
"The government will not tolerate activities that endanger public health and safety," he said. "Residents should immediately desist from drying processed cassava on roadsides and highways and comply with environmental health regulations."
Responding on behalf of the community, a representative of the village head thanked the ministry for the sensitisation exercise and pledged to relay the message to residents who were not present.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to promoting healthy environmental practices and safeguarding public health through sustained public enlightenment and enforcement of environmental regulations across the state.
