Ekiti Govt Intensifies Flood Prevention Sensitisation

 

The Ekiti State Government has intensified public sensitisation on flood prevention, urging residents to maintain clean surroundings and dispose of waste properly to reduce the risk of flooding.

The Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Dr Sunday Omoya, gave the advice while monitoring the June monthly environmental sanitation exercise in parts of Ado-Ekiti.

Omoya said the sensitisation became necessary following predictions that Ekiti is among the states likely to experience flooding this year.

He advised residents against dumping refuse in drains, gutters and waterways, stressing that blocked drainage channels are a major cause of flooding.

The permanent secretary urged members of the public to adopt approved waste disposal methods and ensure that drains around their homes and business premises remained free of obstruction.

According to him, the state government will continue to intensify public awareness campaigns and enforce environmental sanitation laws to safeguard lives and property.

Omoya, however, noted that the success of the government's efforts depends largely on the cooperation of residents.

He expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance recorded during the sanitation exercise and appealed to residents to make environmental cleanliness a daily habit rather than an activity observed only during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
