The Ekiti State Government has paid over N9.7 billion as counterpart funds to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) since the assumption of office of Governor Biodun Oyebanji in October 2022, the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Femi Akinwumi, has said.
Akinwumi disclosed this while featuring on Ekiti Loni/Ekiti Today, a live radio programme, where he highlighted key achievements recorded by the Oyebanji administration in the basic education sector.
He said the total sum paid as counterpart funds between 2022 and 2025 stood at N9,709,522,481.83.
According to him, N1.20 billion was paid in 2022, N1.39 billion in 2023, while N3.55 billion was paid each in 2024 and 2025.
The SUBEB Chairman said the funds had significantly transformed public basic education in the state through the provision of conducive teaching and learning environments, improved access to education, increased enrolment and retention of pupils, and reduction in out-of-school children.
He added that the intervention had also improved healthcare delivery in schools through the provision of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, enhanced digital literacy, increased availability of teaching and learning materials, and strengthened teachers’ capacity through regular training and retraining.
Akinwumi said the counterpart funds had also fostered collaboration between government and development partners, leading to improved monitoring and implementation of educational projects.
On infrastructure development, he disclosed that 699 classroom blocks had been renovated between 2022 and 2025.
He gave the yearly breakdown as 208 in 2022, 168 in 2023, 161 in 2024 and 162 in 2025.
He added that 106 classroom blocks were currently undergoing renovation or construction across the state.
The SUBEB Chairman further stated that the board also procured 8,410 pupils’ furniture and 1,447 teachers’ furniture between 2022 and 2025 to improve comfort and learning outcomes in schools.
Akinwumi disclosed that 59 boreholes had been sunk in schools across the state from 2022 to date, while 41 perimeter fences were constructed to enhance security.
He said 8,336 teachers had benefited from various capacity-building programmes between 2023 and 2026.
The training programmes, he said, covered Jolly Phonics, Head Teachers’ Leadership Development, ECCDE, SMASE, School Support Officers’ training, instructional technology and digital literacy, inclusive education, quality assurance practices and school administration.
He also said 355 caregivers were trained within the period.
Akinwumi noted that the board had strengthened monitoring and administrative efficiency through procurement of 1,145 Android tablets, two Toyota Hiace buses, 12 laptops, 30 Android tablets, six printers and a solar inverter.
The SUBEB boss said over N860 million had been released as running grants to public primary schools from 2022 to date.
He said the government also expended N182.3 million on instructional materials during the period.
Akinwumi disclosed that the administration recruited 1,500 teachers and 200 non-teaching staff in 2023, as well as 362 security guards in 2024 to strengthen service delivery and improve school security.
On staff welfare ,he further revealed that 7,178 primary school teachers had been promoted from 2022 to date.
According to him, 259 teachers on Grade Level 15 were promoted to Grade Level 16 in 2025, describing it as a historic feat in the state’s education sector.
The SUBEB chairman said a total of N268 million had been disbursed under the staff housing and vehicle loan scheme for primary school teachers.
He added that Gov. Oyebanji recently approved N200 million to recapitalise the scheme.
Akinwumi also highlighted achievements in extracurricular development, saying the board had procured various sports equipment and agricultural tools to support holistic pupil development.
He said the agricultural programme was equipping pupils with practical entrepreneurial skills and promoting self-reliance among learners.
The SUBEB chairman reaffirmed the board’s commitment to sustaining reforms aimed at improving basic education delivery across Ekiti State.
