Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has reiterated that building a healthcare system that is accessible, reliable and capable of meeting residents’ needs remains a top priority for his administration.
Governor Oyebanji made the remarks during the commissioning of a state-of-the-art medical laboratory at the State Specialist Hospital (SSH), Ikere Ekiti, donated by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede.
Represented at the event by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Oyebanji Filani, the governor stressed the importance of robust diagnostic services in delivering effective treatment.
He commended Oluyede for the donation, noting that the new facility would give residents of Ikere Ekiti and neighbouring towns improved access to essential diagnostic services. He added that patients would no longer need to travel long distances for specialised laboratory investigations.
"The commissioning of this facility represents far more than the unveiling of a physical structure. It symbolises progress, hope and a renewed commitment to providing quality and efficient healthcare services to our people. This means quicker diagnosis, more effective treatment and ultimately better health outcomes," the governor said.
The clinical laboratory, named after the CDS’s mother, houses specialised sections including Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Histopathology and Medical Microbiology, capable of providing a wide range of diagnostic services essential for patient care.
In his remarks, General Oluyede said the project was inspired by a desire to give back to the community.
Represented by General Justin Ifeanyi, he explained that the project, supported by friends and well-wishers, was aimed at benefiting Ikere Ekiti and surrounding communities.
In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Hospitals Management Board, Dr Olasunkanmi Alabi, described medical laboratories as the backbone of modern medical practice.
She said accurate diagnosis forms the foundation for effective treatment and patient management.
Dr Alabi added that the new facility would enhance prompt, reliable and high-quality diagnostic services, improve clinical outcomes and strengthen residents’ confidence in the state’s healthcare system. She also commended the governor’s administration for its strategic investments and interventions in the health sector.
In separate goodwill messages, the Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, HRM Oba Adejimi Adu, and the Chairman of the State Hospitals Management Board, Dr Austin Ibikunle, expressed deep appreciation to General Oluyede.
They said the gesture demonstrated that leadership is not only about position but also about service, and described the initiative as both commendable and inspiring for the advancement of healthcare in the state.
